If you want to get to know the real Tyler Smith, just ask him about baseball. Tyler played baseball from the age of five, until he was 16 years old. His stepdad is a Little League coach. He has a cousin who plays in the big leagues. Tyler coached as a volunteer at Major League Baseball’s Urban Youth Academy.
“My stepdad has been my coach—both on and off the field—since I was five years old,” says Tyler.
“He taught me to play hard, but always with honor and dignity. He taught me the fight isn’t over until the last out. And he showed me how to turn individuals into a team that looks out for one another instead of themselves.
“In short, my stepdad taught me the philosophy that guides me every single day in politics.”
Tyler spent his early years in Houston, moved with this family to Los Angeles, and then came back to Houston to attend Texas Southern University (TSU), where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Political Science and Government.
Tyler was a Presidential Fellow under President Joe Biden and worked in DC as an Executive Assistant for U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff.
Today, Tyler Smith serves as the deputy regional director for Everytown for Gun Safety, where he builds coalitions of survivors and legislators across the South to increase government engagement, supports volunteers in their advocacy efforts, and collaborates with activists across the ideological spectrum to find common ground. His work is informed by his personal experiences losing loved ones to gun violence.
Tyler recently completed the Obama Foundation’s Leaders Program, for leaders working in the public sector, civil society, and the private sector who have demonstrated a commitment to advancing the common good.
