Tyler Smith’s Plan to Keep HD 138 Safe:

Tyler Smith is running for Texas House District 138 in Houston because every family deserves to feel safe in their neighborhood — and that means addressing violent crime, gun violence, and the root causes of crime at the same time.

〉Keeping Repeat Violent Offenders Off the Streets

Tyler supports comprehensive, bipartisan bail reform that keeps repeat violent offenders detained while protecting the constitutional rights of people who have not been convicted of a crime. He believes public safety and civil rights are not in conflict — and that getting this balance right is what real criminal justice leadership looks like.

〉Community Violence Intervention: Trusted Voices, Real Results

Tyler has helped secure $2 million for community violence intervention programs that bring trusted community members, faith leaders, and law enforcement together to interrupt cycles of violence before they escalate. As state rep, he will fight to expand these programs to HD 138 and across Harris County.

〉Preventing Gun Violence — A Personal and Professional Priority

Gun violence is not an abstraction for Tyler — he has lost loved ones to it. He currently works for Everytown for Gun Safety, where he has built bipartisan coalitions of survivors, lawmakers, and law enforcement to pass legislation protecting children from gun violence. As state rep, he will bring that same coalition-building approach to Austin to pass common-sense gun safety reforms.

〉Mental Health Diversion for Nonviolent Offenders

Locking up people who need treatment instead of incarceration does not make communities safer — it makes them less safe. Tyler supports expanding mental health treatment programs and diversion courts so that Texans in crisis get help, not a criminal record.

〉Investing in Young People Before Crime Takes Hold

Tyler believes the best crime prevention is opportunity. He supports funding after-school programs, youth sports, job fairs, and community mentorship programs that give young people in HD 138 alternatives to street violence — and a reason to stay engaged in their community.
